Answers:

What is airbrush tanning?
Tanning occurs when the skin produces pigment to protect itself from UV rays. In airbrush tanning, the tanning solution is applied by a technician using a compressor and airbrush. Airbrush tanning solutions contain an active ingredient, DHA, that reacts with the outer layer of skin, producing a bronzing effect. It must be emphasized that the pigments resulting from an airbrush tan DO NOT provide UV protection. The maximum generation of color is reached within about 12 hours, so the color will continue to darken after the initial application. Airbrush tanning solutions also typically have a normal bronzer that provides an immediate tan effect and helps the operator to distinguish areas of the skin that are applied and unapplied. Most of this added bronzer will come off in the first shower/bath after application.

What is DHA and how does it work? When DHA (dihydroxyacetone ), a colorless 3-carbon sugar, is applied to the skin a chemical reaction with amino acids in the surface cells of the skin occurs. A browning, or tanning, effect is produced. DHA does not damage skin -- it only affects the outermost cells of the epidermis. DHA has been approved for sunless tanning by the FDA.

Should I be concerned about an allergic reaction? True DHA allergic reactions are very rare. More commonly, people will experience Contact Dermatitis. This is roughly about 1% of the general public however, which is well within the normal ranges experienced with any cosmetic ingredient.
The cosmetic products on drug store shelves also have roughly a 1% reaction rate.
When using a sunless tanning solution, don’t automatically assume the reaction is from the DHA.
If an allergic reaction does occur after your sunless tan application or if you are prone to allergic reactions there are several factors that can cause individuals to have a reaction. I will gladly do a small patch test with my solution before spraying your entire body free of charge. There are alternatives if you find that your skin is in fact reacting to a DHA solution.
Keep in mind that skin reactions can come and go. Many people may be more prone to reactions at certain times of their life, and fine in others. A majority of my colleagues are aestheticians and have offered to evaluate any of my clients skin if needed.

What if I have acne or sensitive skin?
Acne prone skin is very similar to sensitive skin. Breakouts can occur from pore clogging etc. But also from use of an ingredient that is either to harsh on your skin, or one you are sensitive to.
Alcohol, tints, fragrances, and Botanical or natural plant products can all cause an acne breakout.
If the breakout occurs immediately, you can be assured it is related to an irritant.
A breakout from a clogged pore will take two to three weeks to manifest. A majority of my colleagues are aestheticians and have offered to evaluate any of my clients skin if needed.

How long will an airbrush tan last? Typically once per week or within a 4-10 day period from the prior application. However, there are factors that can cause your tan to excelerate fading or that can be used to elongate your tan. Essentially, the length of time can depend on each individual differently.

What results should I expect? With a tinted solution, the bronzer will produce an immediate coloration. The DHA tan should develop within 12 hours. After the bronzer is washed off the underlying DHA tan should result in skin coloration that is 1 to 2 shades darker. Multiple applications may produce deeper color.

How long does it take to apply? A single application will take approximately 25 to 35 minutes. For your first session allow an additional 10 to 15 minutes for me to go over the details with you.

What should I do to prepare for an airbrush tanning session? On the night prior to, or on the morning of your airbrush tanning session, use an exfoliate. Use a non-oil based exfoliate. Lotions and make-up may act as a barrier to prevent the tanning solution from reaching and interacting with the skin. In general, the skin should be clean and free from applied products. Shower, Shave and Exfoliate the night before. Dial soap is one I recommend for pre-tan preparation. Please be certain to read through my pre and post tan instructions prior to your tanning session. What should I wear to an airbrush tanning session? Wear loose fitting clothing to your tanning appointment. Allow 10 minutes drying time after your session before dressing. Although, I do have a dryer on hand to speed up the drying process and my choice of tanning solution is one that dries in less than half the time of most other solutions and leaves you feeling dry not sticky like the other tanning solutions used by many other technicians.

How soon can I shower after an airbrush tan? Allow 10-12 hours after your tanning session before showering. Ideally, the DHA application needs about 12 hours to reach its peak. Try to avoid any activities that will make you sweat or get wet.
